WRC Victims of Domestic Violence Shelter
Since 1980, the Shelter has provided safe, temporary housing for victims of domestic violence and their children. Residents receive individual and group counseling, as well as information on housing, job training, legal aid and financial assistance available. They also benefit from the understanding and support of the staff and other residents.
Rape Response Team
The Rape Response Team is a group of trained volunteers who are available, upon request through the Crisis Line, to meet rape victims at the hospital emergency room. They provide victims and their families with support and information about counseling and other services. If requested, they can accompany the victim to court, and provide support and information during legal proceedings. (Rape Response Team services are subject to the availability of volunteers.)
Counseling
Victims of sexual assault and domestic violence have special therapeutic needs. We offer a combination of short-term individual counseling and ongoing group counseling for survivors of domestic violence, incest, rape and (as staff time permits) women in transitional situations. Fees are set according to the type of service offered and the client's ability to pay. No one is refused service due to inability to pay.
WRC Education Program
The WRC Education Program provides staff for public speaking, workshops, conferences, SAP (Student Assistance Programs) groups and other educational groups that provide information about domestic violence, date rape, healthy relationships and other related topics. To contact this program or to enroll in the adult Domestic Violence Education Group, call 364-9424 and ask for the Coordinator of Education.
Children's Program
The services provided a WRC include groups for children that coincide with women's support groups. Once again, these groups focus on giving children a sense of choice and the freedom to express all emotions. Free play, combined with some structured activities, provide fun and growth for children who have experienced crisis.
Court Advocacy
WRC can provide court advocates who assist women in accessing the legal system. The advocate can also assist victims who wish to file protective orders and offer moral support during other court experiences. The Court Advocate is not an attorney. If you need to reach this program or you are an attorney that would like to volunteer for this program, call 364-9424 and ask for the Court Advocate.
WRC Cells
"WRC Cells" is an agency sponsored program that can offer victims a cell phone at no cost. The cell phones can only reach "911". Women are given the phone, all attachments, instructions and suggestions on how to keep themselves safe. If you need to reach this program, call 364-9424 and ask for the Coordinator of Education or the Court Advocate. If you would like to donate a cell phone to this program, you may drop it off at our office located at 501 East Alameda, Norman, Oklahoma.
